A Brief history
1903
In May 1903, Auckland eye surgeon, Dr George Thomas
Humphrey, along with 20 other motoring enthusiasts,
founded the Auckland Automobile Association, the first
motoring association in New Zealand. Canterbury and
other regions across the country quickly followed suit.
Over the ensuing years, a total of 14 associations were
set up around the country.
These people were visionaries. No one believed them when
they boldly proclaimed: “The motorcar will become the
accepted means of transport and will replace the horse.”
1924
The first road map was produced. Since then, millions of
free maps have been printed and issued to members. Over
the next several decades, AA Centres opened throughout
the country offering an ever-expanding range of services
to members.
1980s
The 14 associations began to merge to form NZAA. This
new national organisation provided a unified voice for
motorists and consistent services became available to
all members nationwide.
1991
Full merger was achieved and the corporate office of the
NZAA was established in Auckland, under the leadership
of our CEO, Brian Gibbons.
1990s
Products and services diversified through new joint
venture companies, franchise operations and business
partnerships.
2003
NZAA celebrates its centenary, starting with the NZAA
annual conference. |
