The workings of the Medical Care Society
Southern Cross Medical Care Society is a not-for-profit
Friendly Society, operated for the benefit of its
members. Many of those members take an active interest
in how the Society is run, so we have created a
Governance section on this web site to help keep members
up to date. It includes information relating to Annual
General Meetings, the Society’s Rules, Directors’
profiles and news from the Board.
Our early history
“In 1960, a small group of prominent Auckland
professional men held a series of meetings…hatching a
proposal to introduce to New Zealand something many at
the time thought alien to our welfare state legacy –
health insurance….Little did they know [the
not-for-profit health care organisation] would become
arguably the largest consumer co-operative New Zealand
has ever seen – the Southern Cross Medical Care
Society.” Sunday Star Times, 1997.
This excerpt provides a hint to the fascinating early
history of Southern Cross, which featured a medical and
political who’s who of the 1950s and 60s. Read more
